Think Naturally, Build Naturally | How to adopt the biomimicry mindset

On January 11, 2021, we launched our first-ever course Inspired by Nature. As we now prepare to launch our course to a second cohort of biomimicry innovators, we are reminded of the importance of starting with the mindset. At Biomimicry Frontiers, we believe that in order to successfully perform biomimicry, we have to begin by understanding how we solve problems (or what we call inner biomimicry). This requires looking critically at our assumptions, our beliefs, our biases and our paradigms for they are at the root of how we behave, how we innovate and how we can create. We have inherited a set of systems that are born out of ideas from the past — including outdated ideas about our relationship with nature. How can we begin to rectify these?

This April, we encourage you to take some time and tap into the assumptions that are guiding you so that you can begin to shift them.

Assumptions | Assumptions help us simplify complex environments by providing an interpretation of certain situations. On the flip side, they can often be limiting. What we assume about the world has a direct impact on how we relate to the world. What truths are you holding on to about the world that you may want to let go of?

Paradigm | A paradigm is a lens through which we look at the world which, therefore, determines what we perceive (Stacey, 1996). Are you holding onto any rigid frameworks that are guiding your personal beliefs?

To effectively do biomimicry, we must explore which of our ideas might be blocking our ability to see both nature’s and our own creative genius. Our assumptions help us define who we are but they may also be a barrier to true creativity and innovation. The level of climatic and ecological destruction occurring today suggests that a complete transformation must sweep through our societies and even our moment-to-moment perceptions. To avoid a climate catastrophe, it will take a revolution of the mind.
